I am trying to understand the contents of a ffs_batch file. Is the xml syntax documented somewhere?

Yes, but Dr. Google was not helpful. I did not find any documentation for the XML syntax.

Google certainly provides many good references describing XML in general
(opening/closing tags, etc.)
Once you are familiar with the XML concepts, the FFS XML tags are pretty much self-descriptive.
