I've spent so much time trying to get this working so I thought I'd post it here and save someone else some time. I couldn't find any solutions here either but I fluked this one.
I'm using Linux Mint 20.2
I installed Zeit and used it to create my crontab task. I referenced this page here:
https://ostechnix.com/zeit-a-gui-front-end-to-crontab-to-schedule-jobs-in-linux/
The command I used in Zeit was this:
/home/my-user-folder/FreeFileSync/FreeFileSync /location/of/my/Local-backup.ffs_batch --display=:0.0 >/dev/null 2>&1
Now I can get some sleep...lol
Yay.....I got crontab working

Great! Also gnome-schedule works the same.
