I did a rather large Sync (version 11.2...*), from my working USB stick to my backup USB stick. The computer was not online at the time. The process was very slow but got through most of the job. When it stopped prematurely, the destination USB showed "The disk is write-protected". I have been unable to remove this write protection, even unable to reformat the USB. My questions are: is this a familiar thing, and what is a proven method of removing this write protection (as imposed by FreeFileSync, presumably as a protective measure)?
* I have finally updated to version 11.13...

I've seen this issue with USB drives, it has nothing to do with FFS though. You have to use CMD and DISKPART to remove the read-only flag for the drive. May have to reformat after if the data is not there. This is a sign of a failing USB sometimes, keep an eye on it
