I find the date filter on FFS really useful. I use FFS for running backup of
changed files and it complements my weekly image backup of main drives. Hence
I have FFS set to only backup the last 14 (for an overlap) days of files. What
I could with doing though is to have FFS not reproduce all the empty directory
structure, and also for mirror, to delete empty directories. Is there any
setting to have it do that?

Thanks for the info. It seems getting rid of empty folders should be the
default behavior here (and only for time span, not for filesize). Therefore
I've made FFS exclude all directories if the time span filter is active. This
effectively gets rid of empty folders. Implemented in v3.19.
