It seems that are all items only living on right (updated) side are compared backwards with left side. In my opinion these is not neccessary on update mode (or also user defined mode to update only new and changed items to right side).
I have here thousands of logentries on right side there longterm backup archive is located and only want to add new created or changed logs from left side. If I run freefilesync over network it takes a lot more time than comparing only the files living on left side compared to the right in update mode.
