Google translate:

Hello dear FreeFileSync team,

I installed "LUBUNTU V22.04.1 - Jammy Jellyfish" and "FreeFileSync V11.26" on my notebook.

In order to synchronize the files from my /HOME partition on my Toshiba notebook with the /HOME partition on my second device, a Medion netbook, I loaded and installed "FreeFileSync V11.26" in program version 11.26, it is said to be can also be used and work for my current LINUX version "LUBUNTU 22.04.1".

I've been using this "FreeFileSync" software for many years and I've always been very happy with it, only now with "LUBUNTU 22.04.1" I'm having problems.

Annotation! I also installed "FreeFileSync V11.26" on my second device, a MEDION Akoya netbook with LUBUNTU 20.04.5, and the software works there without any problems and without any error messages.

The installation of the "FreeFileSync V11.26" software was also possible without any problems in my new "LUBUNTU 22.04.1 Jammy Jellyfish", there are only problems when starting it.

There is a serious problem when starting "FreeFileSync V11.26". Although "FreeFileSync V11.26" starts and I see the program window briefly, the computer crashes after a short moment.

If, on the other hand, I start RealTimeSync V11.26 from the same software, the computer does not crash, perhaps because the program window is not as complex in terms of graphics as with FreeFileSync, where the problem occurs.

When starting the "FreeFileSync V11.26" software and shortly before the computer crashes, the following message always appears in a small additional black window:

FreeFileSync Problem message when starting FreeFileSync under LUBUNTU 22.04.1
This message is displayed in a small black rectangular window, see my screenshot attached, when starting "FreeFileSync V11.26" briefly before the notebook crashes:
[
''lxqt-config-monitor
Default screen settings have been applied.
If you want to change monitor settings, please use lxqt-config-monitor.''

For information purposes, I am attaching 3 screen copies of the settings for the screen regarding lxqt-config-monitor:

1.- lxqt-Setup_ScreenSettings.jpg

2.- lxqt-extended_screen_settings.jpg

3.- lxqt-INFO_ScreenSettings.jpg

Is there or can I add another screen for testing for the screen that is specified as "LVDS-1 (Seiko Epson Corporation)", e.g. on my netbook a simple "LVDS" without -1 and without manufacturer information , try it, which maybe works with a different resolution?

How would I have to proceed to add and configure an additional screen to the current "LVDS-1" for testing?

Now my question to you dear "FreeFileSync users", what can be the problem and how can I fix it, because I really want to be able to continue using this "FreeFileSync V11.26".

What can or should I do with this lxqt-config-monitor error, where in "LUBUNTU 22.04.1 Jammy Jellyfish".

I would be very happy if you would help me to install and use this "FreeFileSync V11.25" again in my newly installed "LUBUNTU 22.04.1 Jammy Jellyfish".

I beg of you all, please help me with your good advice.

When you say "the computer crashes" does that mean you must then power off or reboot the computer to get it to function normally again? Or do you mean that FreeFileSync 11.26 crashes and never is available to use?

How do you run FreeFileSync 11.26? I guess you use a menu entry. Can you run the program in a terminal window? Depending on how you installed the program, it could be in one of multiple places. /opt/FreeFileSync/ would be a good place to look. The reason I want you to run 11.26 from a terminal window is we would be able to see additional output which could indicate the problem.

If you want to install version 11.25, you can visit this site's archive.

Hello BGStack15,

Thank you for your attention to my Freefilesync/Forum contribution entitled "Starting" Freefilesync V11.26 "Causes" Lubuntu V22.04.1 "PC Notebook Computer to Crash".

I hope BGSTACK15 that I can also get the Freefilesync in my "Lubuntu 22.04.1-Jammy Jellyfish" to work and use.

With your help and support, BGStack15, think I could succeed.
I am, as far as computers, are not so fit and always need very detailed information if I should check or carry out something.

I will now try to answer your questions as well as possible here.

>When you say "The Computer Crashes" does that mean you must that power off or reboot the computer to get it to function NORMALLY AGAIN?<
Yes, that's roughly the case, with the difference that the notebook itself does a restart, whereby I have to enter my password again so that the notebook starts again normally.

>Or do you meaning freefilesync 11.26 crashes and never is available to use?<
After the subsequent restart of the notebook, I can start the "Freefilesync 11.26" again, but after its start the notebook is crashed again and restarted automatically.

>How do you run freefilesync 11.26?<
In order to start Freefilesync 11.26, I click on the "Green Start button on the desktop", which was created by Freefilesync 11.26 during the installation, start a start from the menu entry by Lubuntu, which was also stored by Freefilesync 11.26 there, leads to the same problem With the crash.

>Can you run the program in a Terminal Window?<
If you, BGStack15, explain to me in detail how I have to do this, I will be happy to try starting in the terminal.

>Depending on How You Installed the Program, It Could Be in one of multiple places. /Opt/Freefilesync/would be a good place to look.<
This is correct, the program appears at: /opt /freefilesync
See also the screen copy in the appendix!

>The reason I want you to run 11.26 from a terminal window is we would be able to see additional output which could indicate the problem.<
I understand, but in order to perform this correctly, I would like to ask you, BGStack15, to explain the necessary entries from the procedure in the terminal window as much as possible.

Now I hope, BGStack15, that I can bring to function and use the "Freefilesync V11.26" under "Lubuntu V22.04.1" on my notebook, with your help and support.

Thanks in advance!
NB: Excuse me, but I speak normally German and must translate with Google my German Text in English!

You could search your main program menu for "Terminal" or GNOME Terminal or KTerm or xterm or another terminal emulator program. People might call such a big, black window with text a "command prompt."

Inside such a terminal window, you can type commands to run. We want to cd (change directory) to the path that you showed us earlier in your file manager. The dollar sign here indicates the prompt, and you should type the commands that on the same line as the dollar sign. Do not type the dollar sign.
$ cd /opt/FreeFileSync/
$ ./FreeFileSync
So this code block shows two separate commands. The first changes directory to /opt/FreeFileSync, and the second command tries to run FreeFileSync. The dot in this command means "current directory," so that you are saying to run the file "FreeFileSync" that exists in the current directory. Linux shells generally do not want to run commands from the current directory, so you have to tell it to use current directory with the dot-slash.

Unfortunately if running the program is going to completely crash your computer, then the program may not output anything to the terminal before we can look at it! I am not capable of providing support if it completely crashes your computer. That is beyond my skillset. Possibilites there include, the wrong architecture (but that should throw a different error and not crash), a localization problem (not likely), or something else.

I have tried to start FreeFileSync by the Terminal, with the command you give me:
$ cd /opt/FreeFileSync/
$ ./FreeFileSync
The problem that the Notebook crash is still happened.

What should I do now to solve the problem ?

Before on this Notebook I had installed LUBUNTU 20.04.5 and the FreeFileSync V11.24 was quit working correct all times without problems.

Now after the Upgrade to LUBUNTU 22.04.1 it is not working correct.

The FreeFileSync installer places a symlink into /usr/local/bin (or /home/$userName/.local/bin"). Therefore it's sufficient to enter just:
$ FreeFileSync

Hello Zenju,

I've checked what I can find from the information you gave me.
The FreeFileSync installer places a symlink into /usr/local/bin (or /home/$userName/.local/bin").
I have make 2 Screen Copies about what is in my LUBUNTU 22.04.1 Jammy Jellyfish to find.

Please take a look at my 2 screenshots:
1. WY I have 2 Program Files_freefilesync + FreeFileSync_under_-user-local-bin-_2022-10-17

2. WY I have NO Files for_freefilesync or FreeFileSync_under_-home-lubuntu-.local-_2022-10-17
I really hope that you Zenju as a "FreeFileSync" specialist can help me to regard my problem with "FreeFileSync".

The problem with the LUBUNTU 22.04.1 Jammy Jellyfish crash still persists, and I hope you will help me, because I am not a specialist like you.

Hello, dear FreeFileSync USER team,

On October 14, 2022, at 7:24 p.m. I registered and logged in to the FreeFileSync forum here.

Since I had problems installing FreeFileSync 11.25 on my notebook, which was also newly installed with "LUBUNTU 22.04.1 - Jammy Jellyfish", I wanted to address my problem to you in the forum, hoping to get some help and support to solve the FreeFileSync issue I am currently having.

Today October 19, 2022, I installed the latest new version of "FreeFileSync 11.27" in the hope that this version might solve my problem.

Unfortunately this isn't the case, the same problem persists, just like with my previously tested other versions of "FreeFileSync" which were 11.24, 11.25, 11.26 and now 11.27, all of them have the same problem.

This message is displayed in a small black rectangular window, see my screenshot attached, when starting "FreeFileSync" briefly before the notebook crashes:
"lxqt-config-monitor"
Default screen settings have been applied.
If you want to change monitor settings, please use lxqt-config-monitor.''
What shall I do with this error message?

Maybe the settings off the monitor, is the reason for the Problem, but how to change this?

Is there anything I can do about this somewhere?

I would be very happy if one of you could give me helpful tips because I need this "FreeFileSync" very much to synchronize my second computer, a netbook.

Remarque: I have today also updated "FreeFileSync" on my Netbook with the version 11.27 and it is working there without problem, the only difference is that my Netbook works with LUBUNTU 20.04.5, means the last version before the upgrade to 22.04.1.

Hello alejbox or alecbox,

Thank you for your answer to my topic: "FreeFileSync V11.27" causes "LUBUNTU V22.04.1" PC notebook computer to crash

I tried to reinstall FreeFileSync exactly according to your instructions.

First I deleted and removed everything from the existing FreeFileSync installation, and then I did a new clean installation with your details.

Unfortunately, I have to tell you that the problem with the new clean installation didn't work, the same problem as before with Ubuntu 22.04 crashing still exists.

I think it has something to do with the graphics display of my notebook, although I don't have any display problem except with FreeFileSync, I can watch both videos and TV shows on my notebook without the notebook crashing or freezing.

Before the operating system update to Ubuntu 22.04, when I had 20.04 and all other Ubuntu versions before that, I had never had any problems with FreeFileSync, only now with Ubuntu 22.04.

I would like to ask you to think again what is the cause of the FreeFileSync not working and freezing, the FFS software starts and is displayed on the screen for a short time, but I cannot use the mouse because FreeFileSync freezes and then this Notebook crashes immediately.

I would be very happy to hear from you again.

Helmut sends best regards

I removed my proposed solution because there is not enough information about problem:
- run: lsb_release -a
- publish the version of QT you use
- run: lxqt-config-monitor
- publish the contents of the launcher (.desktop) or shortcut icon for launching LXQt-config-monitor
If you ask for help, you must provide all the details of your environment.
PS: Qt is a nightmare and you are not the first to have such problems with Qt environments. And using an LTS doesn't mean that the problem with Qt goes away. And LXQt is based on Qt, so it's not problem-free.
I think the problem is with your environment, not with FFS, so my proposal is that you do your FFS tests with Ubuntu Mate Desktop, which is a low-power environment, similar to the one you use and 100% compatible with FFS. If the problem goes away then I would suggest you to switch to another desktop or distro.

Do the following:
PS: I do not recommend that you do this procedure on the computer that has problems. If you have another physical equipment available for testing, skip to step No 2

1. Create a test VM with virtualbox 7. If you already have Virtualbox installed, skip to step 2.
Optional: You can use the following script:
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/maravento/gateproxy/master/conf/scr/add/vboxinstall.sh && sudo chmod +x vboxinstall.sh && sudo ./vboxinstall.sh
2. Download Ubuntu Mate 22.04.1 ISO
wget https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/releases/22.04/release/ubuntu-mate-22.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso
3. Install Ubuntu Mate 22.04.1 x64 on the new VM (or on a physical computer) and update the OS at the end of the installation

4. download and run
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/maravento/gateproxy/master/conf/scr/ffsupdate.sh && sudo chmod +x ffsupdate.sh && sudo ./ffsupdate.sh
5. Create a script (myffsbk.sh) with the following content
#!/bin/bash
# replace this variable with your linux user. example:
myuser="your_user"
# replace this variable with the folder where your ".ffs_batch" extension files are saved. example:
ffspath=/home/$myuser/myffsfiles

/opt/FreeFileSync/FreeFileSync $ffpath/myfile.ffs_batch --display=:0.0
6. Run your backup script
PS: If your ".ffs_batch" file is to sync "/home" folders you don't need sudo
chmod +x myffsbk.sh
./myffsbk.sh
7. Post the results

Hello alejbox,

For your information, I would like to inform you that I am already 75 years old, so it is no longer that easy when it comes to solving technical problems, and I am also not a trained computer scientist either, so I would like to ask you to excuse me if I have to say more to ask questions as necessary.

I am also a Germanophone, which means my mother tongue is GERMAN, so in order to write to you, I always have to have my German text translated by Google, so if you speak German, you can also write to me in German, that would be for alejbox me easier.

I need your help because I can't do it due to my lack of computer science alone.

IMPORTANT! I have installed LUBUNTU 22.04.1 as the operating system on my TOSHIBA Satellite L300 NOTEBOOK, and I don't have a MATE, I would like to stay with LUBUNTU if possible, since I'm already fairly familiar with it.

Regarding your first e-mail from today, November 1st, 2022 at 2:33 p.m., I will try to answer your questions from this first e-mail as precisely as possible.

For - run: lsb_release -a:
lubuntu@toshiba-satellite:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS
Release: 22.04
Code name: jammy
lubuntu@toshiba-satellite:~$
For - run: lxqt-config-monitor:
lubuntu@toshiba-satellite:~$ lxqt-config-monitor
Icon theme "breeze" not found.
Connecting to
...
lubuntu@toshiba-satellite:~$
Attached you will also find a screen copy of the lxqt-config-monitor: MONITOR SETTINGS screencopy-_2022-11-01.jpg

For - publish the version of QT you use

My question is: What does "version of QT" mean, where can I find this information in LUBUNTU 22.04.1, or how can I call up this information with the terminal and then send it to you?

If your question here concerns the LXQT Version: 0.17.0 system settings, then see my screen copy in the attachment: LXQT Version 0.17.0 INFO screencopy-_2022-11-01.jpg

For - publish the contents of the launcher (.desktop) or shortcut icon for launching LXQt-config-monitor

To open or run the LXQT_Configuration Center I can do this via: /home/lubuntu/Desktop/lxqt-config.desktop

The screen that opens is the following, see ScreenCopy attached: LXQT_CONFIGURATION CENTER screencopy-_2022-11-01.jpg

I am also of the opinion that the problem is with the LUBUNTU 22.04.1 installation software or its settings in the environment and not with FFS.
The new, freshly and cleanly installed FFS now also starts, but it freezes immediately, then crash the notebook after a few seconds.

It can't really be my TOSHIBA Satellite L300 NOTEBOOK, because I've been working with the FFS on this notebook for many years, but so far always with LUBUNTU 20.04 or with previous LUBUNTU versions like 18.04 and others before, and this WITHOUT ever, or I never had problems with FFS.

I really want to avoid a complete NEW installation of my TOSHIBA Satellite L300 NOTEBOOK to switch from LUBUNTU to MATE.

I ask you alejbox, ask me as detailed questions as possible, if you need more information or want to run tests.

Best Regards
HELMUT alias 659888

I wish I could reach 75 years old and be as lucid as you. I'm also not a native English speaker, and sometimes I have to use the translator as well
You don't need to change your linux distro. You only need to do the procedure that I described step by step in a virtual machine with Virtualbox

there are a couple things you can do before doing the virtualbox procedure.
Start FFS on your lubuntu and...
- run this command and upload htop.html:
sudo apt install htop aha
echo q | htop | aha --black --line-fix > htop.html
- and run this command too and upload kworker.txt:
grep enabled /sys/firmware/acpi/interrupts/* > kworker.txt
- and upload a copy of the file:
/var/log/syslog
PS:Please clarify the type of partition you use (ext4, Btrfs, ntfs, fat32, etc) where is the operating system, FFS installed and where is the folder you intend to sync

PS: I have a big question. Did you install lubuntu 22.04 from scratch or did you upgrade from a previous version to 22.04?
If the answer is that you upgraded to 22.04, that was not a good idea, as there are always bugs between program versions.
If you want nothing to fail you, format and install lubuntu 22.04.1 from scratch

here are other things to consider if the problem persists.
- Previous versions of ubuntu (18.04, 20.04, etc) worked with xorg and 22.04 with Wayland. Then it is possible that there is no Wayland support for your PC. So try to start with xorg
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-enable-disable-wayland-on-ubuntu-22-04-desktop
- The other situation is that your equipment is a Toshiba satellite L300 is an old laptop. With an Intel GMA X3100 graphics, Intel Pentium processor and DDR2 800 MHz RAM. I'm not sure if it will be able to full support Ubuntu 22.04
If FFS worked fine on your lubuntu 18.04 or 20.04, you should have stayed on those versions and not upgraded to 22.04. It seems to me that asking too much of your PC.

Hello alejbox,

For - Run "htop" in the terminal:
That doesn't work because the notebook crashes.
As INFO, I am sending you a later screenshot of -htop-:

There you have your answer to the problem. HTOP is showing it to you:
Your PC is at the limit of its capacity. The laptop does not have enough RAM memory to run any programs and is filling up the swap.

Reviewing theToshiba Satellite L300-25E datasheet, these are its features:
https://es.dynabook.com/discontinued-products/satellite-l300-25e/
Processor: Intel Pentium T4200
Hard drive: 250GB
RAM: 2GB DDR2 (800MHz)
Video: Intel GMA 4500M
These features are not supported by Ubuntu 22.04/20.04 LTS

Recommended Minimum System Requirements ubuntu 22.04 (These requirements also apply for ubuntu 20.04)
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements
Ubuntu Desktop Edition
2 GHz dual core processor
4 GiB RAM (system memory)
25 GB (8.6 GB for minimal) of hard-drive space (or USB stick, memory card or external drive but see LiveCD for an alternative approach)
VGA capable of 1024x768 screen resolution

PS: 4GB of RAM means only for the operating system. To run programs you will need to increase the ram memory (8GB minimum recommended)

So the solution is:
- Downgrade lubuntu to a previous version (16.04/18.04) that consumes less system resources (They are very old OS and will soon be out of support. I wouldn't recommend it)
- Or increase RAM memory, double or triple (it is almost impossible to buy new DDR2 RAM on the European market)
- Or change laptop (this is my recommendation)

FFS I'd think to be a relative lightweight - memory-wise.

The laptop does not have enough RAM memory to run any programs and is filling up the swap.
It appears that Firefox is using the most RAM.

So, if you were to Quit Firefox first (& might as well quit Thunderbird too), would FFS then open & run without issue?

(And I suppose that after quitting FF, it can't hurt to run another HTOP & verify that Swp usage has declined, significantly.)

@therube My opinion does not change. This is not a problem with FFS but with the laptop, which does not have enough resources and does not meet the minimum requirements of the operating system it has installed. So no matter what you do to reduce system load, it won't be enough.
I'm amazed how this laptop, with 2GB of RAM (DDR2 800 Mhz), boots up and gets to the desktop without crashing

I'm amazed how this laptop, with 2GB of RAM (DDR2 800 Mhz), boots up and gets to the desktop without crashing acg, 02 Nov 2022, 15:24

Hello ACG,

I apologize for having to disagree with you, but I believe that the problem described is an FFS problem and not a notebook problem.

ATTENTION! I don't have 2 GB of RAM, but 3 GB of RAM installed on the notebook.

For testing purposes, I deactivated all unnecessary programs on the notebook before I started FFS again for testing.

In addition, I have no other problems with my TOSHIBA notebook than only with FFS.

Surfing the Internet with FIREFOX is easy and even fast.

I can even watch TV programs and video films without any problems, without jerking and without dropouts.

The THUNDERBIRD email software also works quickly and easily.

I also work a lot with LibreOffice, WRITER text and also CALC tables every day, this LibreOffice software also works perfectly and also quickly and without problems.

So I can't understand why you think it's a notebook problem and not caused by FFS.

In order to show you the notebook conditions under which I started the FFS again, but had to experience another crash, I am sending you screenshots in the attachment with the information on the memory states before the start of FFS or the freezing of FFS and subsequent crash of the notebook.

OK, so your Swp is well down, & you are still having issues, so that probably (well, IMO) points to Swp not being the issue.

So then (& I know nothing of Linux), I would look at the "lxqt-config-monitor" end of things (of which I'd have no clue).

Does Linux have a "safe mode" of booting or are you able to use a different "windows manager" (no idea what I'm saying here ;-)) kind of thing?

(And then there was also that part where your earlier OS version did not have this issue...)

@659888 You did not answer all the questions I asked you:
- Did not upload /var/log/syslog file
- You never mentioned the characteristics of your laptop (only the brand and model) so I had to look them up on the internet
- You did not answer the question if you installed lubuntu 22.04 from scratch or upgraded to lubuntu 22.04 from a previous version
So, I provided my technical concept based on the little information you gave.
And since you don't agree with my concept, then I can't help you. Maybe another user can kindly assist you.

PS: If your laptop is 3GB RAM, it does not meet the minimum requirements of Ubuntu 20.04/22.04

Hello ACG,

Sorry, I forgot to reply to your second email.

The following information is attached as requested:
20221102_23h30_COMPLET VAR-LOG-SYSLOG file.pdf

I installed the NEW LUBUNTU 22.04.1 Jammy Jellyfish from scratch on the ROOT partition "/dev/sdb1" which was previously created with "25GB" and was "FORMATTED" as "ext4" before installation.

I have owned this notebook for many years, and I always had the FFS installed for the various LUBUNTU versions up to the last 20.04.05 before the upgrade or the clean new installation on the current NEW "LUBUNTU 22.04.1 Jammy Jellyfish" version and it had always worked perfectly without any problems and on the same Toshiba notebook as now.

If you need more information about the properties of my laptop (notebook), then please get in touch and I'll try to accommodate all your requests.

Best regards HELMUT alias 659888

LXDE was the standard desktop environment in Lubuntu, an Ubuntu derivative which received official endorsement in 2011, up to and including Lubuntu 18.04 LTS (Lubuntu switched to LXQt starting Lubuntu 18.10).
the problem is that ltqr is no longer oriented to PCs with few resources, like yours, but to modern PCs, which makes it not feasible to use lubuntu 22.04 and for this reason I have suggested several times that you downgrade, up to 18.04, which was the last version LXDE used

About syslog:
According to the information provided in the pdf file, your PC have a problem with its graphics card and sddm. Perhaps this new version of lubuntu has made changes to the video driver or to sddm. I'm not 100% sure

Possible solutions:
- run:
sudo journalctl -b -1 | grep sddm
sudo apt-file list sddm
and if there are errors try this solution
https://superuser.com/a/1721403/886205
- You can also try disabling the video driver or booting in recover mode and try FFS in this mode
https://linuxhint.com/boot-ubuntu-into-recovery-mode/
- Or you can also boot your laptop with Ubuntu 18.04 LiveCD and try FFS in this mode

My recommendation is the same.
Sorry I can not help you anymore

A madness...
To close this issue, FFS works normally on Lubuntu 22.04. Maybe this will be useful to another user who uses this distro.
