Hi,

I didn't found in the manual, FAQ and Forum an explanation for the file update function. I would be happy for a save answer.

I am using the comparing variant "file content" and I only want to add new and updated files in the target folder (no deleting anywhere). In my german version it says something like "update the element on right side". In which situation will the file on the right side get updated (other time, name or content)? And what is happening with the old version on the right side? Can I set, that the old file gets moved in a special folder? Or can the new file get just an extension like "v2"? I see the special folder option only in case of deleting files. Will the updated files on the right side get deleted?

Thank you in Advance!

The Update sync variant leaves any files that pre-exist in your "target" location intact, even if such file does not, or no longer exist in the "source" location.

Regarding other name: FFS (FreeFileSync) will only Compare identically named files in identically named folders, relative to the left and right base location, and consider those for synchronization.

After you have selected and OK'd you Compare method (in your case Update), you can go to the Synchronization Settings (F8) and select your sync variant (in your case File Content). You can then see how FFS will handle the different Compare results by looking at the (in case of Compare by Content: four) Difference categories and looking at the Action below each category (hoover your mouse over the Difference category and corresponding Action).

Both the Mirror and Update sync variant may update an existing file in the "target" location.

What then happens to the file that pre-existed in your "target" location and gets updated, depends on your Delete Files setting, which is part of your Synchronization Settings (F8).

You can, if you use the Delete Files method Versioning.

the RecycleBin and Versioning method applies to deleted and overwritten files
