Found a workaround but not a fix.
set the power saving feature to turn the monitor off after 1 minute. wait for it to do that, then turn monitor off properly.

Transfer pauses without monitor

On OSX 10.9.3 and FFS 6.5 (Build May 1 2014 - Unicode x64) I'm trying to sync 6GB of data. its pumping along at 115MB/s which is fantastic. Problem is if i turn of my monitor the transfer pauses. if i leave disk activity monitor open before turning off monitor, then leave monitor off for 10min ...
