When doing so the transfer rate was extremely slow - 2 mb/sec max. Often slower, as slow as 0.5 mb/sec at times.

@xCxXenon, yeah I'm aware, but I'm afraid it'll get too messy if my backup doesn't mirror my source. If something were to happen to my source drive and all I'd have is my backup, I wouldn't know what's what. Sometimes I purposely delete files ...

The source drive and the backup drive are both external USB 4TB hard drives (each about half full).

Yeah, I didn't think of the option that Windows could be the problem.
Come to think of it, I didn't even think of ruling out the USB cable, or the port in the USB hub I'm using. I'm using an independently powered (5V 2A) USB (USB 3.0) hub.
