I have a Galaxy cell phone and can confirm that FTP or SFTP are better choices than MTP. I use FTP to eliminate the encryption overhead because I'm working at home and don't worry about the encryption.

If you do a search in this forum on "Galaxy MTP" you find numerous posts on the same issue.
Particularly Samsung apparently severely messed up their MTP protocol implementation.
The general recommendation is to use FTP or SFTP instead of MTP.

Trying to sync between my Windows 10 laptop and my Galaxy Tab A8 via USB. I get the following error:

Cannot write modification time of "mtp:\Galaxy Tab A8\SD card\[filename]".
Setting the modification time (12/28/2022 5:57:16 PM) was silently ignored by the device (1/5/2023 8:48:59 AM).

Is there a way for RealTimeSync to detect the presence of a smartphone or tablet?
With FreeFileSync I can synchronize smartphone and PC. (mtp:\Galaxy A12\Phone\DCIM\Camera).
But FreeTimeSync does not allow this.

Works with one phone, not the other, so start with the phone itself. Make sure it is set to MTP, but other than that, it may be another victim of unreliable MTP/cable/etc

Good to hear that disabling fail-safe file copy is a feasible workaround. The above issue doesn't seem to affect all MTP devices, so it's probably better to keep fail-safe active by default. I have the same issue both with a Nexus 6P and a Samsung Galaxy S8+. Perhaps newer phones treat files somewhat differently? The model you are testing with is 4 years old.
