If you do a search in this forum on "Galaxy MTP" you find numerous posts on the same issue.
Particularly Samsung apparently severely messed up their MTP protocol implementation.
The general recommendation is to use FTP or SFTP instead of MTP.

Re: Flatpak of FFS crashes when pointing to Phone folder
Problem seems to be related to MTP issues in Linux.
But I found another solution. On the phone you can install an ftp program like “Cx File Explorer” and create an ftp share. In FFS, you can access that then if you are int he same network (which would normally be the case).

There is an app in Google Play called wifi ftp.
No encryption is necessary if you're backing up your own phone in your own home on your own network. It's faster than using encryption.

Thank you for the answer.
I didn't think MTP was that sensitive.
Setting up the smartphone as an FTP server is obviously more complicated; I was hoping there was a simple solution.
But I've read up on it now – it seems to be a working solution.

Speed for MTP devices, at least modern/quick ones, usually goes like this, top is fastest:

(S)FTP and Google Drive already have user-configurable timeouts. This leaves native file system, and MTP.
I think we probably don't need an extra layer of 20-sec timeout on top of that!?

Re: Possible causes for MTP syncing failures
For anyone else having this problem, You can try using FTP over a local network (Your home wifi router, USB tethering)
Possible example. For security ... shared path" of your phone in the amaze FTP server settings.
This is way more stable than MTP. With a good router, you can even do wireless transfers.
