Sounds like a broken executable, most likely caused by AV (e.g. Avira is known for causing this kind of trouble).

I have Panda AV but it didn't throw any warning

I had exactly the same problem with the last three version updates.
In my download folder I can find two files:
FreeFileSync_9.7_[Donation_Edition]_Windows_Setup.exe
FreeFileSync_9.7_[Donation_Edition]_Windows_Setup.key

Both only 1 kB in size ...

When I download the ZIP manually from the Website I get to files:
FreeFileSync_9.7_[Donation_Edition]_Setup.exe
FreeFileSync_9.7_[Donation_Edition]_Setup.key

Perhaps a naming problem - so that the automatic download couldn't find the files on the server ?

I've fixed the issue! Can you try the auto-update again? (but clean up the broken old files first)

Unfortunately there is no update available at the moment - as I've updated manually ...
I'll check that with the next update and keep you updated !
