I tried to update an older Windows 10 version with a newer one, witch I of course did not boot from.
To speed the whole process up, I excluded in addition the the standard files:
pagefile.sys
swapfile.sys
And because of access rights Problems:
*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\
*\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\AppRepository\
Those files were identical anyway as far as I verified it.
Unfortunately the whole process went fatally wrong, because the SSD with the updated Windows 10 system did not boot afterwords.
Does someone have an idea why this did not work? Please don't stone me to death. And yes, I know that there exist specialised software to clone system partitions.

FFS is intend to backup (typically) "data" files.
It is in no way intended to (re-)create a bootable system environment.

The specialized software exists because a data synchronization program is not suited to create bootable backups, for the reason you experienced. They simply can't be trusted for that use-case and imaging software is suggested for that reason

That may be. But it is not even necessary to create them, because they already exist. And they are hidden anyway. So FFS has just to update the "normal" partition. The specialized software exists because a data synchronization program is not suited to create bootable backups, for the reason you experienced. xCSxXenon, 23 Aug 2023, 18:49
Too bad, I would have been interested in what exactly the reason is and whether it works with a different configuration. I was attracted by the idea of quickly updating a complete system.
If it is absolutely impossible, Macrium Reflect still hast to clone the whole partition. Even if 99,9 % is the same as before. :-(
