When Syncing to a USB hard drive, I notice that the reported copy speed goes up and down. For instance it runs at ~110 MB/s for a while, then stops to 0 B/s for a while, etc.
Is this normal, and if not, what can I check to rectify the problem? (This is on Linux to a USB 3 HDD).

Probably normal, it is likely filling up a write cache and then has to flush some of it for more data. Or it's failing. Check SMART data with something like gsmartcontrol

Smart data is fine. So I guess it's normal. Maybe I need to consider an SSD myself.

Go SSD everyone!
I have about 6 new flash drives I'll never use.
SSD is a LOT more expensive, only the SPEED is WORTH IT!
I get under 50 with flash and over 400 with SSD!
