Why doesn't the filter work after editing it if synchronization has already been performed?

After creating a task and performing a mirror synchronization, I add exceptions to the synchronization filter that should detect extra elements on the right side during comparison (due to the new filtering rule added). But for some reason, the specified detection of extra elements does not occur during comparison. To get the desired result, I have to delete the entire copy before synchronization. Is there a way to get the desired result without first deleting the copy?

I'm not sure what you mean by
> To get the desired result, I have to delete the entire copy before synchronization
which entire copy of what would you need to delete?

After you run a Synchronization, you can modify the Include and/or Exclude rules.
In some cases this will instantly update your list of left and right side items with (proposed) actions.
But not always.
This is kind of obvious, because the sync you just performed may also impact the Compare results.
The only thing you then need to do is press the Compare button (F5) again.

The only potential point of improvement for FFS is that presently in those cases the Compare icon/button is grayed-out (but nevertheless active).

I mean deleting the contents of the folder on the right.

Checked again - does not work.
You can try to perform the specified actions yourself. Specifically, I created inside the left folder (other) folders with names containing ___ and after synchronization I added this *___* to the exclusion filter

The desired result was obtained only after preliminary cleaning of the right folder.

Got it. Thank you! This needs to be written down somewhere in a visible place, since many people ask about it.
