I am using FreeFileSync to make a 2nd backup of files downloaded from the internet. They are downloaded directly to our Dropbox folder on the local drive, syncing them in cloud. However, if someone were to delete these files in Dropbox, since the folders are synced, it would delete them locally as well.
It seems the solution I (nearly) want is the "Update" feature, using an external drive: it appears it would copy and update all newly downloaded files to an external drive, preserving them even if they are deleted from their source.
However, according to the FAQ,
"...files deleted on the backup drive will not be copied again (e.g. after you have removed photos you don't want to keep)."
I would like to set it to re-copy any file that may be accidentally deleted from the backup.
That way as well, when the external drive is handed over for inspection, if the inspector (likely) moves all of the files instead of copying them, plugging the drive back in will pull all the files back the way they were.
Would this be achieved by going to Synchronization Settings > Update tab, and simply changing the right option for "Delete" to "Copy New Item to the Right" (as below)?
Thank you for your help!
Auto-Restoring Deleted Files Using "Update"?

Never tried this specific use-case,
but what you describe makes perfect sense.
Just to make sure, give it a try.
Run an Update sync,
after it finishes, delete a specific file from the (right-side) backup,
then run (just) a Compare (initially with the Update setting),
verify that the specific file would not be copied left=>right,
then change the Update sync variant into the Custom one you shared above (even no need to run a new Compare), and verify that the specific file will now be copied left=>right.
Make sure to then actually run Synchronize to restore the specific file you deleted right-side.
