Copy locked files means NTFS VSS = ON
Most de-fragmenting programs default to VSS OFF
What happens if both occur at the same time?
Not an issue for me as de-fragmenting is a manual housekeeping process here.

If FFS cannot do what it is supposed to do, it will show an error message, as always.

I'm not saying FFS or the defrag prog is wrong, I'm saying it might produce an error message that would be hard to figure out or not be understood cf. more than one recent discussion.
For example it is unknown if the user would see the error as being in one prog or the other, both are doing what they should do but their needs are diametrically opposed.

I can't remember having received a support request about some kind of "VSS not active" error. The majority of the time the issue is lack of elevation

which we sometimes put down as lack of user knowledge, neh?
if you don't understand my point leave it
I said at the start this is not a problem for me

What exactly is your point? I don't see an issue here at any (conceptual) level.

you don't see a problem with two concurrent applications needing NTFS VSS in orthogonal states?
strange
one
application needs NTFS VSS ON
another
application needs NTFS VSS OFF
if your imagination is small they will not clash and never have.
P.S. I think I can force the clash but as I said, it is not natural here

So is there any todo, action item, feature request for FreeFileSync? (PS: this is the FreeFileSync support forum)

Of course not! I think you are being obtuse now. Or, possibly a language thing, in which case *I* apologise because this was meant to be a heads up not a moan.
I thought you would see the connection to other people making reports unconnected *directly* with FFS but which they see as clearly connected.
FFS <-- exasperation with you :)

Please wm, keep civil manners. Although FreeFileSync forums do not have an "etiquette page", this doesn't mean that rude comments are tolerated.

Yes, as already mentioned above, this problem doesn't happen in practice (read: it is possible, but there were zero support requests for FreeFileSync)you don't see a problem with two concurrent applications needing NTFS VSS in orthogonal states?

I am being rude to the same amorphous group of people as you, the people that don't understand. Do *not* make me the bad person
Anyway, I think, as time passes you will understand.
Bye for now
