I have been using Dropbox to perform my file syncing and backup quite successfully. However, knowing that hackers have been targeting large cyber servers lately, I feel that it is inevitable Dropbox too will be hacked, no matter how much security they have. Not to mention... for now, it is free up to a certain amount of data. Tomorrow, those terms might change.
Background:
I have configured a batch file to allow my wife and I to work with financial data between our two computers using Dropbox's server as the go-between. (The program that utilizes the data does not like to share... causes major data corruption.) These financial files, while encrypted, still contain sensitive information.
So, my batch file
1) Moves the desired data file from the local Dropbox folder, (whereby it is deleted from the remote computer's Dropbox folder),
2) And places it into a local temporary folder,
3) Launches the program,
4) Waits for the program to close,
5) Puts the data file back inside the local Dropbox folder (whereby it gets copied into the remote Dropbox folder),
6) And then deletes the temporary folder.
This prevents accidental access by the other computer and it ensures the integrity of the data file. Also, by having it synced to a local folder on each computer, if something were to happen (modem breaks, server becomes unavailable, out in the middle of nowhere without internet, hotel's internet resets, etc.), we could still at least access the file to work with it and notify each other of the issue, then manually re-sync when the issue is resolved.
Purpose of Post:
I want to get away from using Dropbox. While it is great for some things, I value my financial data to be kept private more than risking a hack on Dropbox, and it's too large to email back and forth (not to mention the headache of dealing with moving it manually like that).
How to?:
I have a computer that stays running at our house 24/7 that I want to use in place of the Dropbox Server. I've looked into using FFS and have been successful in getting Laptop1 to sync with HouseComputer(HC) using TwoWay file sync. However, after failing to get Laptop2 to sync with the same HC folder ("second part missing" error??), I'm wondering if I should be using Mirror instead, and if so, should I be mirroring from Laptop1/Laptop2 to HC, or from HC to Laptop1/Laptop2.
Also, I travel a lot for work, so being able to do this both in and out of the house is a must. I do have FileZilla setup already on this laptop, but am not sure how to setup FFS for SFTP transfers, particularly in this manner.
I could use some advice on this from you gurus out there.
Thanks.
How do I Emulate Dropbox with FFS?

While FFS is a great tool, in this case, you'd save a lot of headaches by checking out SyncThing. It's more suited to what you're trying to accomplish. I'm sure with a lot of rigging FFS could be used in this manner, but it's like trying to drill a hole with a phillips screwdriver.
