I'm a new user and I'm trying to sync Documents on my desktop PC (my main computer) to my notebook (I last copied the file over using a memory stick a few months ago). I dragged and dropped the desktop Documents folder to the left side and the notebook Documents folder to the right side (the notebook contents appearing under "Computer" as it is on my home Network). When I click "Compare" I get the following:
Cannot set directory lock for "\\HPULTRABOOK\Users\Ken\Documents\Documents"
Cannot write file "\\HPULTRABOOK\Users\Ken\Documents\Documents\sync.ffs_lock"
Error Code 5: Access is denied. (Createfile)
I have no idea what to do next
Error Code 5

I take it to mean that you don't have sufficient permissions to access \\HPULTRABOOK\Users\Ken\Documents\Documents.
(Is the double documents correct, \Documents\Documents ?)
Are you able to browse (Windows Explorer or otherwise) to \\HPULTRABOOK\Users\Ken\Documents\Documents?
Are you able to write & delete files there?

No, I can access HPULTRABOOK. That's just the name I've given my notebook. Yes, I can browse, write/delete files. I just added it to the Network on my desktop - that's all there is on the network.
The double documents is correct - in fact there's one more - I don't know why that is, maybe because I transferred everything from an older computer when I set it up using a transfer dongle? But they both work fine.
Sometimes I do get messages like "you don't have permission to delete this file" but I go ahead and delete anyway and it works. I am the "administrator". I do my best with this stuff! Thanks for your help.
I just tried to attach a screenshot showing what it looks like - the folder list, the error message, but it says the file is too large (460kb)

Try this way instead, Posting a screenshot on the forum.screenshot ... says the file is too large
I gather you've networked (LAN type network) the two computers together?
Oh, so you're not:
And just what do you mean by dongle? Or do you mean a crossover cable?I set it up using a transfer dongle?
(Wonder if that is playing into it?)
Can you write/delete to/from (specifically) ...\Ken\Documents\Documents\ (across the network, like from Windows Explorer).
What OS (are on both computers)?
Maybe check your Sharing permissions?

Yes, it's a LAN type network - I don't use it for anything, but I added the notebook to the network because I couldn't see any other way of dragging the target file to the FreefileSync window.
Yes it was a crossover cable, but that was 2 years ago and everything seems to have worked pretty well.
Yes, I can write/delete files on the notebook from the desktop across the network.
I'm using Windows 7 on both.
I don't know how to check sharing permissions.
I made the screenshot smaller but it's unreadable.
I thought this would be an easier way to keep the files on my notebook up to date for when I travel. I'm thinking it's easier to just copy them across using a USB memory as I have been doing! Or maybe I should see if SyncToy works for me.
Grateful for any ideas but it's midnight here and I'll check tomorrow!

One last question - do I have to download FreeFileSync to the notebook? I only did it to my desktop. And unless I have the notebook on and appearing under "My Computer" on the desktop, how else could I locate and drag and drop the target file to the right side of the FreeFileSync window? But none of this is in the manual, they expect you to know it all, which indicates to me perhaps this program requires more basic knowledge than I have.

Hi therube. Today is another day and I found the permissions and gave myself permission to do everything. I guess it had been set at default. Anyway after that, with a couple of hiccups, it worked! And I tested it on an update and that was ok too. So thank you for the help.
