Version 8.6 has trashed my backup system

I keep a number of backups on large USB drives. After having installed v8.6 the program no longer recognizes the existing backups, but wants to replace everything, including syncing in the wrong direction. This has not happened when I installed previous updates. Ideas, anyone ?
