Hi, Im having difficulty with version 4.6 when attempting to sync to one of my
network pcs. Im trying to sync from a win 7 pc to a xp sp3 pc. The network had
been a little flaky some time back until i increased the irpstacksize on the
xp pc. If i try to sync across the network it tells me the files that will be
added/overwritten/deleted (which is correct) and when i press sync the program
crashes. all it does ir put a ffs. lock file in both pc folders, and it puts 1
temp file in the xp folder.

By the way I can manually copy/delete files to the folder im trying to sync
to, and it works perfectly syncing across 2 hard drives on the local pc. I
really like the concept of this software but can someone please help? Apart
from this program my network does everything ok from any pc to any other pc?

oh by the way, if I let the program sit for a while after it decides not to
work i get an error "THE SPECIFIED NETWORK NAME IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE" which
is strange because i used FFS to browse for it????
Incidently vice versa syncs to the xp folder FFS wont?

Sounds like a network issue. Checking directory existence over a network can
take an insanely long time, making the app seem like frozen, if the network is
not reachable. The error code is returned directly from some Win32 API call,
probably CopyFileEx or GetFileAttributes. So the best you can do is to analyze
your network settings and see if you find a problem somewhere.

My network is serviceable, all tasks except ffs work as per normal. I have
used various network analysing tools which reveal no problem. The network
shares are in order. DirSync pro will sync to the folder FFS wont, and so will
vice versa, and create synchronicity? With respect if these 3 other sync
programs work across my network without problems, why say there is something
wrong with my network? My network is not broken, so how do I fix it????? I
have used FFS for several years, but now it simply wont look like working.

Sorry, but unless you can offer some constructive suggestions other than a
very broad statement that MY NETWORK IS STUFFED then ill have to use on of the
several free sync programs that do work across my network, which is a shame.

With regards to your statement above, FFS does search for and find the
directory that I wish to sync to, without any problems. It even compares them
without problems, and as an experiment I changed some files and I know the
results of the FFS compare are accurate. It simply freezes when synchronise is
attempted

I now learn that if I attempt to copy 1 file at a time, instead of multiple
files it works

No, there is no limit on the number of files. Generally, the first limit for
all of FFS's operations will be main memory.

Why will free filesync copy 3 or 4 files across to a network pc, but not say a
dozen or more?

Now i find if I use FFS to sync from my win7 pc to another xp pc on the
network, that xp pc will then sync ok to the pc that win7 pc wont. I have not
found any other faults on access or read write ability anywhere else on this
network?

If there were some FAQ on "how to properly ask for help". Point 1 would be
"provide background information... at all". I'm not telepathic, sorry.

To prove it wasnt just the folder that I was trying to sync to I made a "test"
folder on the xp machine, and shared it. I tried to sync 6 files from a folder
on the win7 pc to the xp pc. FFS correctly identified the difference between
source and target, but crashed when sync was selected. When task manager
killed FFS there was a lock file added to the source folder, and another lock
file and a tmp copy of one of the files in the target folder. The tmp copy in
the target folder showed the same amount of bytes as the source? Does this
help?

Just in case someone else has a problem like this, it turned out to be a
gigabit switch in my network. Put in an old 10/100 switch to try it and
everything, including ffs is working like it used to. weird but im glad its
sorted.

For what its worth, I reinstalled the gigabit switch, and freefilesync did not
work, whereas many other freeware sync programs did. I gave up on FFS which
was a shame because when it did work it was great. I am very pleased to say
that portable version 5.3 works perfectly as earlier versions used to. Dont
know what has changed in 5.3, but thank you
