I like all the functions of the software except that the destination folders
have to exist and be dragged into the right folder. Shouldn't the mirror
function be able to create the folders?

I used to use an old unsupported backup program called BASK where you list one
place for the backups to exist (ie d:\bask_backup) and can list multiple
folders to be backed up there. Then the program will create d:\bask_backup\My
Documents, d:\bask_backup\desktop, etc..) on the fly.

I don't understand the thinking of freefilesync design. Am I supposed to do a
manual copy of all my directories before I use freefilesync for the fist time?

The target folders need not exist. I assume you are worried about the error
message "directory not existing"? Just ignore it, FFS will create them
automatically. However the main target directory field naturally needs to be
filled somehow, FFS needs to know where to copy stuff.
