I’d love to be able to filter files for syncing by the file tag so that only specific files from a given folder or folders will sync.

Yes. My apologies for not stating that in the first place.
Do you have any insight into whether this is a reasonable request or a product that offers it?

Reasonable is subjective. That option isn't available though

I'm not a developer.
Are there technical reasons why filter by tag is not a feature with backup/sync tools?
Amongst a file's metadata, is there something about a file's tag that is either difficult or not available to a developer for filtering purposes?

No idea unfortunately.
Technical reasons, no. Apple would have to add an API call, if they don't have one, to access that and then it would just need to be implemented into the program. Maybe no one cares about tags?

I spend a lot of time writing URLs to a database and including TAGS in that data. Tags and other hierarchies like 'categories' and other stuff like that in wordpress are EXTREMELY powerful and flexible.

I don't disagree, I'm just guessing that the number of people that use them effectively and desire the implementation with something like FFS is miniscule.

Cool. Have you thought about writing logs to mySQL or something? Or the Windows Event Logs?
