Hi,

I am trying to sync some files between my computer (Windows 10) and an external HDD (connected to my computer). One of my folders is missing from my external HDD after I clicked "Compare" in FreeFileSync. I checked the used space of my external HDD that the folder seems to be still on my external HDD but it is not showing under File Explorer even though I have enabled the option to show hidden items.

I connect the external HDD to another computer but also cannot find and show the missing folder.

FreeFileSync version: 11.17

Cannot open directory "Z:\found.000".
ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED: Access is denied. [DirReaderPlus]

Please advise how can I recover the missing folder on my external HDD.

Thank you.

Just clicking Compare in FFS will only read data, and not write or delete any files or folders (with the possible exception of *.ffs_lock files).
Only when running an actual Sync FFS may, depending on your sync settings, potentially delete or overwrite data.

If the deletion/disappearance of said folder would be by FFS doing (while running an actual sync), it depends on your selected Delete Files method if the deletion is permanent, to the Recycle Bin or to a Versioning location.

Thanks for your reply and that is to my understanding too.

I am sure that I only clicked "Compare" (not even "Synchronize") to compare one folder (same folder name) between my computer and external HDD. I went to check my external HDD under File Explorer and that folder just disappeared. There is no .ffs_lock file.

foud.000 is a hidden folder created by Windows after it runs chkdsk on a 'dirty' volume. Use gsmartcontrol to check the health of the drive with the found.000 folder, you need to look at the attributes tab, post a screenshot if you aren't comfortable with it. If it ends up being healthy, just delete that foud.000 folder. There are many reasons a volume can get flagged 'dirty'

Thanks for your reply.

Is this GSmartControl similar to CrystalDiskInfo?

I used CrystalDiskInfo to check the health of my external HDD and no issue being flagged out.
