Hi, I just upgrade to v11.22, never had a problem with past versions, but now it not behaves correctly...
My main daily task (I do several times per day) is to maintain synchronized two "big" directories on two work computer I own (one desktop at office, one laptop when abroad, I'm the same administrator user logged on both computer):
Path 1 (on desktop): C:\ASW
Path 2 (on laptop): \\lucbai-por\c$\ASW
Everything worked perfectly until upgrade.

After a compare (before manual synchronize), this could be the result (fig.1):

No picture was attached. Try a previous version of FFS and see if that fixes it

(don't know what I did, it supposed to be my first post, please consider the previous post not finished)
Hi, I just upgrade to v11.22 on Windows, never had a problem with past versions, but now it's not really behaving correctly...
My main common daily task (I do it several times per day for safety) is to maintain synchronized two "big" directories on two work computer I own (one desktop at office desk, one laptop when abroad, I'm the same administrator user logged on both computer on the same subnet):
Path 1 (local, on desktop): C:\ASW
Path 2 (network, on laptop): \\lucbai-por\c$\ASW
Everything worked perfectly until upgrade.

After a compare (before manual synchronize), this could be a result (fig.1):
1 - OK (IgnoreTimeshift0).jpg
1 - OK (IgnoreTimeshift0).jpg (451.25 KiB) Viewed 2234 times
As you can see the compare is finished but a lot of files differ of one hour because of the well-known reasons (in fact I normally use the option "Ignore Time Shift" with value "1"). If you check fig.1, the compare has been done with "Ignore Time Shift" with value <blank> instead (this leads to a very large number of files that differ but they're actually identical...), because if I select "1" the compare *never* ends!!! FreeFileSync "freezes" as so (fig.2):
3 - Not Responding (IgnoreTimeshift1).jpg
3 - Not Responding (IgnoreTimeshift1).jpg (95.41 KiB) Viewed 2234 times
and I have to force "Close the program" to exit (without synchronize obviously)!!!

More, even with "Ignore Time Shift" with value <blank>, when the compare ends (see again fig.1), if I try scrolling the windows with the right slider to see all files, after a while the program freezes again (fig.3):
2 - Not Responding (IgnoreTimeshift0).jpg
2 - Not Responding (IgnoreTimeshift0).jpg (387.51 KiB) Viewed 2234 times

To be short, it took me a lot of try and error tests and this is what I suppose about this problem:
- it depends on compare between a local and a network directories (local compares *seem* to work)
- it depends on very large number of "different" files
- it seems to depend on "Ignore Time Shift" value (if "1" it freezes before finishing the compare, if <blank> it freezes when you try scrolling a very large number of files)
- it seems not to depend on other options I tried to change (i.e.: Parallel file operation)
- it appears on both computer after upgrade (desktop and laptop)
- O.S. it isn't changed (Window 10 Professional 64-bit 21H1)
- I tried to delete configuration files and re-install program (both local and portable mode) without results

Really no-one else has/had this problem too?

Right now the program is really totally unusable, please tell me what could I try to solve this problem!
Thank you to all for any help,
Luca

Were you running 11.21 previously?
If you revert to 11.21, will that still work without freezing?

With 11.22, if you set up a new sync, same settings, but only a small subset of the files, or even an entirely different tree, will that complete successfully?

Maybe there is some sort of permissions issue & FFS is just trying to hammer away, getting nowhere?
And the issue need not be with "numbers", i.e., the number of files, but perhaps only a specific path?
The one shot mentions TrueCrypt. Is this a TC "drive", & might something there be playing in to what you're seeing?

>> Were you running 11.21 previously?
Yes, like said it was working correctly.
>> If you revert to 11.21, will that still work without freezing?
I just tried to uninstall 11.22 on BOTH computers (you never know) and re-install Donation Edition 11.21 from scratch (with installer, local): I sadly can confirm the problem it still there! Two days ago morning with 11.21 it was working, then i upgraded to 11.22 and it took me some time to realize of the bad behavior (at first I thought I did something wrong). And, apart of upgrade, I didn't do anything else (O.S. upgrades, changing O.S. options, etc.). Maybe Windows 10 changed something by itself "under my nose"?

>> With 11.22, if you set up a new sync, same settings, but only a small subset of the files, or even an entirely different tree, will that complete successfully?
I just tried (with 11.21): the number of file seems not to be the issue, with "Ignore time shift"="1" it freezes before completing the compare and with "Ignore time shift"=<blank> it freezes when I try to scroll (in this last case let's say it freezes even with 60 "different" files, which is a low number)

>> Maybe there is some sort of permissions issue & FFS is just trying to hammer away, getting nowhere?
I'm starting to suspect it but, apart of upgrade, I didn't touch anything else (on O.S. I mean).

>> And the issue need not be with "numbers", i.e., the number of files, but perhaps only a specific path?
I did try different paths (even local/local) but after compare result if I play with scroll slider sooner or later it freezes.

>> The one shot mentions TrueCrypt. Is this a TC "drive", & might something there be playing in to what you're seeing?
I work with TC on both computer since ten (10!) years and I never had a problem with every tool/application I ever used (and nothing is changed in the meantime: version, configuration, etc.).

I'm really stuck and don't know what to think, since I depend on folders synchronization right now I'm forced to use another (slower and very old) tool (FolderMatch v3.7.3) which instead works perfectly as ever.

This could be an interesting issue to solve for the developers, please give me hints/things to try.
Up to 11.21 (when it worked...), FreeFileSync was simply the right tool for me (when I switched to it from FolderMatch).

- Sigh -

Most likely AV interferring or a network glitch (e.g. hanging while deleting sync.ffs_lock)
I'll have a look if you send me a dump file while FFS is hanging:

Hi Zenju,
I just sent you with We-Transfer dump file you requested.
Hope this helps!

The dump file is apparently corrupted ("This dump does not contain any thread information or the thread information is corrupt"). Can you send me another one?
PS: It might be worth a test disabling the following shell extension:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol \AxShlEx64.dll

@zenju: I disabled the Alcohol shell extension and something seemed better at first, but I got again the freeze and sent you the new dmp file.
Hope it's good this time!

AxShlEx64.dll is not disabled, it's still active in the trace. Also it is apparently the culprit for the hang.
The reason seems to be related to DLL loading/unloading. So maybe the hang can be avoided by reinstalling AxShlEx64.dll again. If not, uninstalling AxShlEx64.dll will fix the hang.

Just realizing, this is the same issue (also while trying to get the icon for an "mdf" file): viewtopic.php?t=7382

I did searched over Help forum before asking/starting a post, but I was searching something new related to 11.22.

Sorry if I ask you for a hint (I was sure to disable Alcohol Shell Extension using Autoruns, by unselecting an entry, but you said it was still active)...

From what I know the Alcohol Shell Extension is installed when I install Alcohol 52% Free Edition (a program I use to mount cue/wav couple files as it were a real compact disk to speed up conversion to mp3).
This program install also a SPTD driver (see http://www.duplexsecure.com/downloads) and it acts as a "stealth" program (i.e. it does not appears in Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features). I always have been a little scared about it for this reason, but it works very well (up to now). I checked and the installed version of both Alcohol 52% FE (2.1.1.1019) and SPTD driver (2.13) are the last ones (so I cannot update them).
So, what am I supposed to do? "Reinstall" the same version over the one already installed (by running again the installer)? Or better I should get rid of it and uninstall (and maybe then reinstall)?

(Interesting?) Question: everything was fine with Alcohol and FreeFileSync 11.21 (and previous versions), after upgrade to 11.22 something screwed up (incompatibility with 11.22?). But WHY if I revert to 11.21 I still have the freezes?

I just would like to point out that this thing happened actually two times on the upgrade 11.21->11.22 of two different computers (so it's really seems related to FFS upgrade in some way)...

If "Alcohol 52%" is still maintained => report the bug on their bug tracker
If not => get rid of it, software is last updated 06.09.2014

Alcohol 52% FE 2.1.1.1019 was last updated on 21/10/2021 (not so long ago).

Since you pointed to issue "(trying to get the icon for an "mdf" file): viewtopic.php?t=7382", I digged on Alcohol Options and discovered that under:
Options...->Virtual Drive->Shell Extension
There is a list with every file extension known by Alcohol and their enable to be managed by Shell Extension. The default is that only "mdf" extension is enabled. If was enough to disable it (or better just to be sure to click on [Remove All] button) and the problem/freezes *seems* to be disappeared.

In this way it still *seems* to be possible to work with both FFF and Alcohol without freezes.
Sure, I'd be better to report this bug on Alcohol site (if any), but I'll have to register, explain, post, etc. and I just lose enough time. I hope they'll see this post and correct the bug on next versions. After this I started thinking to substitute Alcohol with a more modern (and safe?) application, I just discovered ImgDrive which supports cue/wav too, maybe I'll give it a try.

So, thank you for your effort and help to solve the problem: I'd prefer to uninstall every other application that cause problem to FFF, since to me it is the best application of its kind.
I'll continue thanking you everyday to have created and maintain it. Really.
