Do I understand correctly: when I do a mirror sync, the original files remain untouched?

Do they stay intact even if sync stops, power is lost, network is lost, or other failures occur?

Correct. Source files are not modified in any way.

If the sync stops, source is unchanged.
Target stands at where ever things were when it stopped.

All else falls under the purview of the OS gods.
