Re: IDEA : Distinguish moves/updates, option not to see empty folder deletes
I wonder if I can bump this idea since there has been no feedback, for the simple reason my feeling is extremely strong that Moves (which do not alter any content) should not be mixed with genuine Updates, and nor should deletions of empty folders be mixed with real file deletions... it represents ...

Indeed :)
In my case it's a backup SSD plugged in via USB - I'm sure that will be many people's cases, or a live SSD in a spare slot in the computer itself which Everything picks up - so all left and right files will be previewable. If someone wanted to preview a network drive I guess they'd index ...

Re: The Default Sync Method Should Be - Update
I generally use mirror. I can see the merits of Two-Way or Update as the default.
Safest perhaps is a default unselected, forcing the user to choose, the synchronise popping up a request to set it until then. Either that or Custom: do-nothing which could be presented in a similar way.

Export as .efu (and others)
I'm sure I'm not alone in doing a "Compare" and ending with a vast number of items!
I always like to check or troubleshoot what Synchronise will do before I click it, but the current layout is rather limited in ability to do that.

Backup strategy when travelling
Generally I have two physical drives D & E for my data, so I don't have all my eggs in one basket (D also has a C partition for the OS). If one fails it's only half the data gone.
So I have two backup drives for them accordingly, D2 & E2.
Then when I am away from home which may be for months, I just ...

Re: Compare by just file time
Just to mention that Winmerge has an option that matches just on Modified Date (meaning Name+Modified) and may perhaps be of help in your task. You could easily do a folder (with subfolders) match and copy across all unmatched files from the one side and a delete on unmatched files on the other side.

IDEA : Distinguish moves/updates, option not to see empty folder deletes
When you've done a compare and it's lined up the two trees of files ready to action the file changes, there are buttons at the bottom you can toggle on/off viewing Creates, Updates, and Deletes. But in my experience they can be improved...
* Updates really needs to be turned into two toggles, namely ...

Re: Compression / New Thoughts
Yes. CompactOS seems normally to compact just the OS files, but I use it to compact all the program files too; some programs are quite large normally.

Re: Compression / New Thoughts
For the SSD lifespan, I've tended to consider it an issue that can raise its head when you are in the later stages of the SSD filling up as there's more wear from juggling around storage to maintain wear-levelling in a diminished space.

Cheers. A little bit of a long shot indeed but since the implementation should be trivial I thought it worth it :) :)

Compression / New Thoughts
I know compression has come up before but I think I may have some new thoughts, which I'll put in the form of an outlined suggestion regarding NTFS.
The settings themself could have a list of file extensions you want compressed for the backup. Obviously you may want doc, xls, txt, log, wav etc ...
