Hey Guys,
I try to compare files from my machine at work with a ftp server at home. Unfortunately German Umlaute like Ü, Ä, Ö are shown as black underlayd questionmark. The files have the same name on both drives, but FFS wants to delete all files with Ö, Ü, Ä on the ftp site and replace it with the same file from the other side.
Can you please help me with this issue?!
regards,
Ives

Can you try with the newest FFS 9.1 and see if the problem persists?

Hi, the problem still exists. German Umlaute are shown as black question mark.

Hi again, even with 9.2 the problem exists. I've added a picture to describe it. I had the same problem with FireFTP Plugin for Firefox, there I have changed from UTF-8 to windows-1252, but I can't find this opportunity in FreeFileSync.

How can I reproduce the issue on my end?

I have files with ü,ö, or ä in their names (e.g. "Tür.jpg") stored on my pc. The same files are on my backup device at home. I connect via ftp to my backup at home. While comparing the files, the "error" on the screenshot appears. Comparing from PC to some extarnal USB device does not cause this error.

Just downloaded the donation version 9.6, and Umlaute are still a problem. As in message of YvesSchaffar as of 11 July, the files containing Umlaute show as new files, but when I then try to sync, it states that it could not be copied as file already exists. I sync an iMac on Sierra with a Qnap, and it shows the "new" files on the Qnap side and then does not allow to copy it to the Mac. Error reads as follows:
Cannot move file
"/Users/FranciscoM/_DATA/W_PROPERTIES/Lotenbach-6/Plaene/Haustechnik-Bodenheizung-Lueftung/PGR_050818_0205_Ausführung FBH EG.25e3.ffs_tmp" to
"/Users/FranciscoM/_DATA/W_PROPERTIES/Lotenbach-6/Plaene/Haustechnik-Bodenheizung-Lueftung/PGR_050818_0205_Ausführung FBH EG.dwg".

This is an unrelated issue and caused by Unicode decomposition on macOS: viewtopic.php?t=4353Just downloaded the donation version 9.6, and Umlaute are still a problem. ... my problems are not "German Umlauts" but icelandic chars on my webserver...
I have uploaded several folders containing icelandic chars to my webserver. There is no problem to sync them with winSCP, but if I try to sync them with FreeFileSync there are problems with icelandic chars.

This looks like an issue with your SFTP server not using UTF8.... my problems are not "German Umlauts" but icelandic chars on my webserver...

The encoding issue should hopefully be fixed with the following version (assuming the problem is due to your FTP server expecting ANSI instead of UT8).
Does the following version work in your scenario?

PS: The unicode decomposition is a separate issue.

Just came back from vacation and downloaded version 10.2 (donation version) Build 6/07/18 Unicode x64, and it screwed-up all my Umlaute again. While it worked in the previous version, it's all messed-up again, and I need to go through several hundred of files to change file names manually. Created several special signs. it's unbelievable how this company manages to screw this up again and again. Any solution would be welcome. Thanks.

Just realised that it's not only the Umlaute but any special sign such as an accent. I.e., cannot synch anymore my iTunes folder with Sinéad O'Connor and many others!

Too many different issues are already mixed together in this thread. Yours seems to be a Unicode normalization issue (macOS uses decomposed, while other OSes use precomposed) like:Just realised that it's not only the Umlaute but any special sign such as an accent. Don't really now the difference between decomposed and precomposed. And yes, I am using a NAS server (Qnap 259) to sync between Mac and PC. Nevetheless, until version 10.1 it worked but never after. So would be it so difficult to be fixed?

Can you describe in detail what your problem is and how it is represented in the latest FFS 10.6?Don't really now the difference between decomposed and precomposed. Hello,
I am having the same issue with "Umlaute" and the FTP connection (here on MacOS 11, running on Apple M1, FreeFileSync 11.8 Donation Edition). Umlaute are shown messed up over FTP connections. On the native Filesystem Umlaute are shown correctly. Running this job would totally mess up my backup.
See screenshot.
Thanks for your support!

The problem is the FTP server fails to report that it supports the UTF8 encoding (although it does according to the screenshot), so FFS has to (incorrectly) assume it is using ANSI.Hello,

This is a server configuration bug: if an (RFC2640-compliant) FTP server supports UTF8, it needs to return "UTF8" as part of the FEAT repsponse. You can check this manually, e.g. via FileZilla.
