And aside from RTFM or anything else.
There is less likely to go wrong with Update sync vs. other methods.

A user then wants to use some other method, fine, let them.
But make them make that conscious effort to do so.

I might use some other method, but I'd have to read & understand, very well, just what the implications are in using other methods [& I don't know, particularly].

The other day someone asked me... & I said - FreeFileSync.
And I threw it onto their computer.
And I said "Update - because it is safer".

And they said, well what about... & I said, "Update is safer".
And if you want to use some other method, then go about & read & learn - first.)

then by the same token, IMO, & in IMO even if that isn't the reasoning ;-), is that the default Sync method should be an Update sync, rather then Two way, simply cause, well, IMO, Update is "safer", in particular for a novice user.

IMHO "two way" is safe enough, and also a "true synchronization", which is what one can reasonably expect from a sync tool, while "update" is not. "Two way" does not delete any files upon first sync, and even during the second sync, the recycle bin will be used.

If you are not happy with the default settings (when defining a sync configuration via "New" ), you can always define a sync configuration according to your own preference and save that as e.g. MyTemplate.ffs_gui.

Instead of creating a new sync configuration via "New", you now open your MyTemplate configuration, modify from there and ultimately save the sync configuration under its own, specific name ("Save as").
Make sure to keep a backup of your MyTemplate.ffs_gui file, for when you accidentally would use "Save" instead of "Save as" when saving your newly created sync configuration.

Because then the number of posts, help requests, and bug reports would increase because a user has changed from the default setting and then later forgotten about it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

if you go by your comment, then there should be no default settings at all. I think the Default should be UPDATE and not Mirror. maybe the program developer could do a poll survey if they do not want to add this option?

I generally use mirror. I can see the merits of Two-Way or Update as the default.
Safest perhaps is a default unselected, forcing the user to choose, the synchronise popping up a request to set it until then. Either that or Custom: do-nothing which could be presented in a similar way.
