Activation - offline... FreeFileSync (Portable, donation edition) [thank you.]
not a big deal, particularly, & more a ramble, but just something to think about...
I have no services at home (only water, gas & electric)...
(yes, i may be atypical in that respect :-))
So... with Portable, without Internet, one has no way to Activate - until you are able to manually copy the URL, & "carry" that somewhere that does have Internet...
Just saying...
(so in that respect, even though i do have portable, i still need to have a "regular" version on hand for cases where i'd want to use the program (portable), but can't activate...)
actually, the very same will happen once 11.16 is out. if i want to put it in at home, i could install (unpack) it, but wouldn't be able to use it until the next time i have access to the Internet...
(during this time, i'd suppose that 11.15 would continue to work? i'll try & see...)
---
Also to note, now that I have (11.15) Activation Code, having copied it [& luckily having remembered to save it to my flash drive], the (copied code) dashes are not "dashes" - at least to my text editor (or Vim for that matter)...
I suppose they'll "translate" over (when I get home [or might not be needed at all?]).
(Seems it's an "en dash" $96$ rather then a "dash, $2d$.)

For downloading the Donation Portable version you need an active Internet connection.
If you then instantly install that downloaded portable version to a portable medium, it will activate with the internet connection still active.
And from that moment onwards, it can be run from said portable medium anywhere, independent of an active internet connection.
Or am I missing anything?

Nope, you got it Plerry. All you have to do is put the portable version on a USB drive. It's more likely they are running it from an internal drive and are very over-analyzing what is happening.

Immaterial. Worked (pasted in) just fine (& activated).dashes are not "dashes"
The idea here is that I download Portable (obviously with Internet connection), but then I'm not running Portable (directly) from USB, but rather taking it home, & "installing" (coping it onto my HDD), & running it there.
Before, at home, I had some old .exe installer version & figured, I've got the current Portable, I'll just throw that in. But done that way, with no Internet, can't activate.
If I were to activate Portable on the USB, I'm guessing it is then tied to that USB & so if I "installed" (copied) it onto my HDD at home, the activation would no longer be valid?
(Oh, & as far as Portable goes, it's not that I need portable, don't even know that I use any of portable's features [in FFS], it's just that I'm a portable type person & generally always tend use "zip's" over installers [or extract contents from .exe's...] whenever I can.)

You can't run a portable version off anything but a removable drive.
If you copy it to your home PC, it will try to activate as another install and obviously won't work without internet.

Note: When the portable FreeFileSync Donation Edition is started for the first time, it adds the current computer to the overall device count (unless already considered).
After that, the portable storage device (USB memory stick or external hard drive) may be used on an unlimited number of computers without increasing the device count ever again.
However, if the portable installation files are copied to a different location on a new computer (instead of running directly from the portable storage device), this will increase the total device count as an additional device installation.

Well sure you can. That's just what I did.You can't run a portable version off anything but a removable drive.
I "installed" (copied) it to my HDD, & activated it (offline, lacking Internet) based on that.
Now, it is only "portable" on my HDD (so not really Portable, any more ;-) ), but that's all that I need.
(And again, it has nothing to do with Portable's added features, simply me, & the way I like to approach things, & for me that means to avoid installers, install where I like, & work as I wish, if possible.
Similarly, my [Windows] C: drive is E:. Windows is installed, resides on E:, with C: being for whatever I want it for - except for Windows itself.)
