Thanks! Your suggestion to open FFS in the terminal was the clue I needed to get this done. I found all that I need to do was, after creating a Timeshift snapshot (I'm a coward), I just right clicked on FreeFileSync in the Menu, clicked on Properties, then clicked in the Open in Root box.

I'm currently running FFS 14.4 in Linux Mint 21.3. I saw somewhere that to get FFS to work with files belonging to root, I have to install it to run as administrator but I can't find out how to do that. How can I get FFS to work with files belonging to root as well as me?

I did some fooling around yesterday and today, based on a hunch triggered by a comment made on the Linux Mint forums, I think I got this fixed.

Thanks for replying. I'm not sure what you mean by jobs. If you mean batch jobs, then no. Same for Taks / Crom jobs. I manually start and run FFS whenever I need to update my backups.

Anyone? I'm totally stumped by this.

Flathub isn't an official version so you'll likely need to contact whoever maintains that package

I needed to get a backup going so I reformatted the drive (ext4) and named it Laptop 1 BU 1, then just copied the contents of Data1 to Laptop 1 BU 1.

Can FFS on a Linux machine copy files from an EXT4 drive to an NTFS drive, such as when using mirror copy or two way copy? Would the same apply when using the Linux machine to move files from an NTFS drive to an EXT4 drive?

Offically, there is no way to verify a file has copied correctly but there is an unofficial "hack". Just follow the below steps:

1. Go to AppData in the User folder.

2. Open the Roaming folder.

3. Open the FreeFileSync folder.

4. Click on GlobalSettings.xml

I do not advise using cloud storage, especially the free ones. Except for the really expensive ones, they are rarely encrypted and, especially the freebies, are subject to disappearing with no or inadequate notice, taking your data with it.

I always run full scans with my AV and other antimalware programs before updating backups.

Those directions may make sense to you but that doesn't mean they make sense to everyone.

I've also had trouble figuring out how to make the "phrases". It would be nice if the GUI would let one could navigate to the file or folder to be excluded and choose to have it excluded.

God Bless your heart (and all your other internal organs)! Please keep in mind when you write something that not everyone is a geek and many of us (especially me) need a simple interface and full, detailed instructions on how to use it.

Something like this included in FFS would be a nice, future upgrade. I spend quite a bit of time hunting down and deleting older files in my Versioning folder to keep it from growing far too big for the space I have for it.
