I duplicated your error and my research suggests that it cannot be done.
Microsoft treats that folder as a special type of folder and it doesn't adhere to normal file folder standards and free file sync cannot write its DB file.

It's best if it were either ext4 or NTFS. If it's FAT32 that's probably your problem. Exfat should work too.

You won't have the whole gui running all the time but you will have a little icon down in the system tray.
That's probably the best you're going to do with ffs. And, as always there is more than one way to skin a cat.

Understood. It doesn't mean that using this option is not a valid way of fixing the problem.
Launch power toys first which it runs with Windows and then fancy zones is pre-configured with where you want your apps to go and then free file sync should open in that window and stay there.

What I do instead of what you're trying is plug a 1 GB ethernet adapter into my phone giving me maximum throughput to my router and to my PC that I used to back up the phone and it can be either windows or Linux and I can mount the phone by the IP address and use ffs.
